About William Henry Flegg
WILLIAM HENRY FLEGG - 1869-1958. My father’s birth was recorded in the Australian Vital Records Index New South. On 30th July 1869. He was born at his parents home in Castlereigh Street. His father John Valentine Flegg was aged 36 years and a dealer by occupation born in London and came to Sydney where he met and married Caroline Elizabeth Edwards in 1857. Dad was the youngest of their five children. If you survived babyhood, or one of the big killers, tuberculosis, typhoid, diphtheria and whooping cough you might go on to live till you were 50 to 56 years in 1900’s So father did very well living till he was 89 years old His first two siblings died at birth. It is believed that his sister Alice married and moved to Townsville, Queensland. Sadly we never knew any more about her. His brother John Valentine was born in February of 1865 and drowned at the age of ten years. He was on board the ship Gothenburg which sailed into a cyclone off the Queensland coast. He was employed as a fireman on the ship. However limited my father’s schooling was he was an avid reader of the Sydney Morning Herald and kept very well written inventories of his business dealings. Mother Caroline Elizabeth Edwards/Flegg died 13March 1872 Brother Arthur died 13 February, 1872 Step- mother Mary Tanner died 1876 Half sister Caroline died 1876 Grandmother Elizabeth Edwards wife of died 27 July, 1873 Grandfather John Valentine Senior died 25 April, 1876
