6 December 1455: estimonial by Patrick of Cokburne of Newbyggyne and temple baillie within the constabulary of Haddington that on 16th June 1455 Robert Crystysone, temple serjeant within the said constabulary had at his command by virtue of a brieve of sasine from the chapel of the master of the temple, Frere Henry of Levyngstone, knight, commander of the Preceptory of the Holy Hospital of St John of Jerusalem within the Kingdom of Scotland given sasine to Archibald of Hepburn of Thyrnystone of a temple land with pertinents lying within the town and 'sulze' of East Fortune which was sometimes called Spensis Land after the tenor of the charter made to him by the master of the temple, in presence of William of Hepburn, brother german to Patrick Hepburn, Lord Halis, James of Quhitlaw of Melloustanis, Thomas Hog of Lyntone, John Wolf of Waldale, John of Learmonth of the Hil and William of Hepburne, son to Alexander Hepburn of Fortune with many others

Evidence from the Laing Charters
20 July 1456: Charter by Patrick Hepburn, Lord Halis, granting to James Thomson of Northhalis, for his service, the lands of Sherefleys, lying in the town and territory of Northhalis, and a cotland, lying in the town and territory of Benyston, with a toft and croft of the same in the granter's barony of Halis, within the constabulary of Haddington and sheriffdom of Edinburgh. Also granting to him that land called a carucate of land named Gourleybank, lying in the town and territory of Lynton, on the south side of the water of Tyne, within said barony, as perambulated by an assize, in excambion for all and whole the lands of James Thomson lying in Northhalis, excepting the said lands of Sherefleys. To be held of the granter in fee and heritage for a reddendo of 6s. 8d. yearly to the chapel of St. Mary at Merkil, with ward and relief, etc. Dated at the Castle of Halis, 20th July 1456. Witnesses, ADAM, the granter's oldest son, WILLIAM and GEORGE HEPBURN, the granter's brothers, James Cockburn, son and heir -apparent to Patrick Cockburn of Newbiggin, with others. [500, Box 15.
