About William Howland Hicks
William was a direct descendant of a patriot of the Revolutionary War John Hicks having been killed on the first day of battle by the British returning from Concord.
He married a descendant of Mungo Mackay, one of the wealthiest men of Boston, who made his money as a privateer owner during the Revolutionary War.
William moved his wife and two daughters to Canandaigua, New York for a period of time in the mid 1850's or 60's possibly for business. They came back to Boston and lived the rest of their lives in Boston and Milton. They have a large tomb in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
