About William Hoffman
William was born on 11 February 1854 and baptised 12 January 1854. Witnesses Hendrik Paul Hoffman, Gysbert Harry Maasdorp Hoffman, and Margaretha Wilhelmina Laubser.
His father, William Johannes Hoffman and mother Susanna Jakoba (Verkuiel).
Evidently associated with the Hoffman family residing in the historic "Herehuis" in Malmesbury.

Verbal accounts say William was a farmer in the Malmesbury district, also leased sheep farms in the Calvinia and Van Rhysdorp districts. Some documents state his occupation as "Vee handelaar".
There is a headstone in the Riebeek Kasteel Dutch Reform Church cemetery containing the remains of two of William's infant boys. The inscription on the head stone describe the interment of the remains. The headstone was arranged by his mother in law, Anna Elisabeth (Hein) Carstens.
In a Dutch historical journal “Het Blauwe Boekje”, Nederlands Patriciaat 56-57, Geslacht Hein, page 73-81, records the name "Willem Johannes Hofman Willemsz" as the husband of Anna Maria Hein-Hoffman.
The death certificate of son, Willem Johannes Hoffman d. 27 Jan 1896 is signed as W. J. Hoffmann. The name on the headstone for the son is William Johannes Hein Hoffman.
William Johannes Hoffman, was in the service of the Crown during the ABW as part of the Malmesbury Defense Force. A document lists his involvement in the Malmesbury Defense Corps during actions in the Northern Cape. Family story reported he was court-martialled and executed ca. 1902. A reference of arrestation papers issued by the British military is in the archives at Kew, UK.
