About William Hopkins of Somerset
Not the same as William Hopkins of Ribbesford
William Hopkins parents are unknown, his birth date and place is unknown, his death date and place is also unknown.
He married Joanna Arnold (daughter of Nicholas Arnold & Alice Gulley) on the 13th October 1611 at Ilchester, Somerset, England.
Their son Thomas was baptized on the 7th of April 1616 at Ilchester, Somerset, England.
Their two daughters, Frances baptized on the 28th May 1614 and Elizabeth baptized on the 3rd of July 1619 were most likely baptized at Ilchester too. Parish registers are not available to confirm this.

An unknown William Hopkins married Joana/Johane/Joane ARNOLD, daughter of Nicholas (not Thomas) Arnold and Alice Gulley in Somerset in 1611. She was buried 10 March 1621/22, in Yeovilton, Somerset shown as "Johane, wife of William Hopkins."
Nothing further known about William.
That William and Joana are the GGgrandparents of one of the two often confused Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785), born Rhode Island, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
According to authenticated records kept by immigrant William Arnold, he says his sister Joane had 3 HOPKINS children baptized as shown here:
- Frances 28 May1614 (married John Mann)
- Thomas 7 April 1616
- Elizabeth 3 July 1619 (married Edward Inman)
(possibly more children but nothing solid. There are other names on "trees" but no documentation.)
Frances and Thomas accompanied Joana's brother, William Arnold to the New World in 1635 possibly indicating that their father was deceased? They went first to Hingham, MA then Providence, RI.

Currently his Profile on FamilySearch has three families combined and parents wrong.

This article reprints a handwritten record dating back to the family of the immigrant WIlliam Arnold. Subsequent research has validated some of the dates, and thus the record appears original and trustworthy. The first section was written by William ‘the settler’ Arnold himself, the next by his son Benedict Arnold, the third by his son Josiah Arnold (1646), and the fourth by Josiah Arnold Jr. (1707).
