William Howland, son of Thomas and Mary Howland, was born on February 12, 1708 in Marshfield, Plymouth County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[1] William Howland was a twin brother of Thomas Howland.

John Howland & William Howland my sons their Heirs & assigns forever all that my Farm that I now dwell on both Upland and Meadow Excepting ye Burying Place four Rod square and that I do hereby Reserve for a Burying Place & Liberty to go to & from the same so often as there may be occasion for ye same the upland is bounded as followeth at ye South East Corner at ye Meadow of John Walker & from thence towards ye NorthWest by ye Land of Isaac Walker till it comes to the highway by ye Brook & so along over ye Brook up towards the NorthWest on the North Side of sd HighWay to a great white oak tree standing by sd. highway near the Barn & from sd. tree along by ye Land of Robert Howland towards ye North West till it [?]neth to the high way that leads from the Grist Mill toward the North River & from thence upon the same Course to ye Land formerly belonging to John Sherman deceased & bounded towards the North West partly by sd Shermans Land & partly by ye Land of Timothy Tailer & so along to ye East side of ye High Way then ranging by sd. highway toward the North to yet land of Thomas Tailer then ranging South East to ye head of Arthur Howlands land to a stake & stones & from thence on a South West Course till it comes to ye Line between Arthur Howlands & my Lands then turning & ranging South East to the Head of ye Brook Joining out of ye swamp called ye Meadow Platt & so ranging down sd Brook to ye River End of sd. swamp & from thence on a Street Course to a Ridge of Hills & so along sd. Ridge towards the South or South East to ye meadow & bounded towards ye. East by sd. meadow & ye. meadow is bounded toward the South by ye. meadow of John Walker & towards the East by ye. South River till it comes to a great Beak which is the Bounds between Robert Howlands meadow & mine then along by Robert Howlands meadow up Creek it comes near to a Point of Upland of Arthur Howlands then ranging along towards ye North by sd. Upland to the Fence then along by sd. Fence to woods the South West to ye Land called the Ridge Hill & toward ye West it is bounded by sd. Upland above Granted To Have & to Hold all ye sd. Granted Premises Except ye before Excepted With all & Singular the Rights Privileges & appurtenances to ye same belonging or in any wise appertaining unto then the sd. To all People to whom these Presents shall come Greeting &c. Know Ye that We John Howland of Swanzey in ye County of Bristol & William Howland of Marshfield in ye. County of Plymouth both of ye. Province of ye. Massachusetts-Bay in New-England for and in Consideration of ye. full Sum of Thirty Pounds Currant money of sd Province to us in hand before ye. Know ye that I Samuel Thomas of Marshfield in the County of Plymouth and Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England yeoman, for and in consideration of the sum of twenty pounds lawful money to me in hand ["well" written over "paid"] and truly paid by William Howland of Pembrook and County aforesaid housewright the Receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and My self Therewith fully satisfyed and paid have given granted Bargained sold and by these precents, do truly fully and absolutely Sill Aline Enfeeof Convey and Confirm[d] unto the said William Howland his heirs and assigns forever a Cartain peice of land lying in the Township of Duxbury, it being part of the 109 & 110 lots at the north west End of said lots, and is bounded as followeth beginneth at a stake & stones between two Cart ways which is the corner of 107. & 108 lots and the North west End Rangeth North thirty Degrees Easterly 80 pole and three Quarters to a stake & stones the North East side rangeth South 49 Degrees & half Easterly by 111 lot till it comes to the Cart way that leads from the widow Foords to James Besbes & then along the said road up toward the said besbs till it comes to the stake first mentioned. Isaac Winslow Esqr appointed and commissioned to be judge of the Proba[te] of Wills and for the granting of Administration in the county of Plimouth within the Province of the Massachusetts bay in Newengland. To Mary Howland of Pembrooke in the county aforesd widdow of Thomas Howland late Pembrook aforesd deceased To Ebenezer Howland of Pembrook aforesd To William Howland of Marshfield in the county aforesd To [erased] Robert Barker and to [blank] his wife of Hanover in the county aforesd and to Mercy Howland who are the children of sd deceased greeting Whereas Capt Nehemiah Cushing of Pembrook aforesd who is app[ointing] and impowered as Adminstrator on the Estate of the sd Thomas Howland deceased and the sd Adminstrator suspecing that part of the many goods or chattles of the sd deceased are concerned embeieled or conveyed away by you or some of you hath therfore moved that you may be cited before my selfe in order to give an accompt therof: These are therfore [ther (slashed) fore (slashed)] in his Majesties Name & Require you and each of you that you appear at my Dwelling house in Marshfield aforesd on Wensday the Twenty second day of March next by ten of the Clock in the forenone then and ther to give an account therof as the law directs hereof foile not given under my hand and the seal of the jd court of Probate the Twenty eight day of ffebruary anno Domini 1737.

In the name of God Amen- the third day of March Anno Domini 1772 I, William Howland of Pembroke in the County of Plymouth in New England Housewright, being Grown into years & under infirmity of body but through the goodness of God of a sound mind and memory, do make & main this my Last will an testament, first I Recommend my soul to God that Gave it & my body to the Earth to a decent burial at the direction of my executor hereafter named; and as touching such worldly Estate as God hath blessed me with in this Life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in manner & form following viz:

Imprimis- I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Mercy Howland the use & improvement of the one half of my Real Estate, and the improvement of the one half of my Buildings so Long as the Remains my widow and also all my Live stock for her own and to dispose of it the shall want them incepting one on which Thereafter Give to my Son William Howland and I also Give to my wife all my household Goods and furniture to improve during her widowhood, but if their shall be any of the Live Stock Live at the decease of my wife, my will is that my Son William shall have them-

Item- I Give to my daughter Rebecca Keen all my household stuff & furniture that shall be left at the decease of my wife excepting some particulars hereafter to be Given to my Son, I Give to my daughter Rebecca also my Side Saddle after my wife, with which the hath already had is her part of my Estate

Thirdly & Lastly, I give and bequeath to my Son William Howland all my Real Estate both upland & meadow with all the buildings thereon, and also all my farming tools & Carpenters tools & Joiners tools of what sort so ever, and one ox that is now worked with one that he now owns, and also two feather Beds & furniture & a warming pan, and also all my wearing clothes of all sorts, and I also hereby Constitute and ordain my sd Son William Howland my sole Executor of this my Last will and testament and hereby oblige him to pay all my just debts and funeral charges & also Give him all Debts that are due unto me wherever they are due, and I do hereby utterly disallow, Revoke & disannul all and every other former will or testament whatsoever confirming this and no other to be my Last will and testament, In Witness whereof I have hereunto let my hand & seal the day & year above written

To all People to whom there presents shall come, Joseph Cushing Esqr. Judge of the Probate of wills &c in the County of Plymouth, within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Greeting-

Know ye that on the seventeenth day of March Anno Domini 1784 the Testament hereunto annexed /purporting the Last will and testament of William Howland Late of Pembroke in said County Houswright deceased/ was presented for Probate by William Howland the Executor therein named; then present Robert Barker, Gideon Barker & Robert Barker junr. the witnesses thereto subscribed, who made oath that they saw the said testator, sign, seal, and heard him declare the said instrument to be his Last will and testament; and that they subscribed their names together as witnesses to Execution thereof in the said testators presence; and that he was then /to the best of their judgment/ of sound of disposing mind- I do prove, approved, and allow of the said instrument, as the Last will and testament of the before named deceased, and do commit the administration thereof in all matters the same concerning, and of his Estate whereof he died Seized and possessed in said County, unto William the before named Executor, well and faithfully to executor the said will, and to administer the Estate of the said deceased according thereto; who accepted of his said trust, and shall exhibit into the Probate office an Inventory of said deceased Estate within three months next coming and he shall Render an account /upon oath/ of his proceedings when thereunto Lawfully Required- in Testimony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal of office the day and year above written.
