About William Hunt

William Hunt, youngest child of Isaac Lansing and Hannah Lincoln Hunt was born in White Shoal district, Dunbar Twp. on February 2, 1836. He was 4 months old when his father died and in April, 1845. His ,with her children, moved to Uniontown where she resided until her death at the age of 94. William attended the public school in Uniontown and for a time Madison College. He left the institution and became an apprentice to Henry W.S. Rigdon, a skilled watchmaker and jeweler. Completing his apprenticeship in 1856, he went to Saltsburg, PA where he worked until the spring of 1858 when he returned to Uniontown and opened a watch repairing establishment. As his business grew he moved to larger quarters staying on Main Street. In 1869 he purchased the property at 7 West Main Street where the Hunt jewelry store would be located for over 100 years.
On October 17, 1861, Hunt married Margaret Sembower and to this union was born 13 children. In addition to be a community and business leader, Hunt was the official government weather observer for Uniontown from 1889 until September of 1915. He gave up this work and turned it over to William W. Marsteller, his son in law.
Hunt died on July 12, 1916 at his home on Church Street. Although frail, he visited his store just two days before. His wife died in 1908.
The first photo shows an advertisement. The dealer I purchased it from believes it dates to the 1880's. The younger photo of Hunt was published in Ellis's History of Fayette County; the older photo in Jordan and Hadden's Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County.
I'm not certain about the address on the advertisement card.
