About William Harvey Jackson

son of Stephen Marshall JACKSON and Minerva MOORE

Jackson, William H., was born on the old homestead farm in Laurel county, Kentucky, on the 7th of March, 1830, and he was a son of Stephen and Minerva (Moore) Jackson, the former of whom was descended from old Virginia stock. Stephen Jackson was a son of John Jackson, of Virginian, who came with his family to Boonesborough, Kentucky, at an early day. Shortly after his arrival in this stat John Jackson learned that a tract of some forty thousand acres of arable land in what is now Laurel county, was to be sold for taxes. He purchased the land at a very low price and it is interesting to note here that some of that estate, including the homestead of the Jackson family, is still owned by representatives of the name. General Jarvis L. Jackson, a veteran of the Mexican War and an uncle of William H. Jackson was a member of the Kentucky legislature at one time and during his incumbency of that position he was instrumental in securing the erection of Laurel Seminary, of which he was practically the founder. This institution was later remolded and it is now occupied by the graded school of London.

After completing the curriculum of the common schools of the locality and period William H. Jackson became interested in farming and stock-raising on his father's estate but in 1852 he decided to make the adventurous trip across the plains to California. On this hazardous trip he was accompanied by William Garrard, a brother of Col. Garrard, and both these young men met with a most gratifying success in the Golden state of the Union. After returning to Kentucky Mr. Jackson invested the greater part of his money in lands and he also purchased the Village Inn or Tavern at London, which he conducted up to fifteen years before his death.

He was a business man of fine and straight forward principles, was deeply and sincerely interested in community affairs and in politics accorded a stalwart allegiance to the cause of the Democratic party.

In Laurel county Kentucky, in the year 1855, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Jackson to Mis Maria McKee, who was born in 1841, in this county and who is now living, that he age of sixty-nine years at the old home place.

Mrs. Jackson was a daughter of John C and Louisa McKee, the former of whom was a son of William Van Lear McKee, who in 1801 came with his cousins to Garrard county Kentucky. Some of the cousins moved to Boyle county, Kentucky, and became interested in Center College, of which Lapsley McKee was later president. William Van Lear Mc Kee was very much interested in the time-honored Masonic fraternity and after he had resided in Kentucky for a time he rode back to Staunton Virginia, to secure a charter, and then established the first Masonic lodge, the "McKee Lodge":, at London. His demit from Staunton Lodge, Free & Accepted Masons, was issued in 1805.

The present McKee family traces its ancestry back to one of seven brothers who emigrated from England to America and settled near Staunton, Virginia, in the year 1775. These brothers were strict, plain Calvinists and were very poor after their emigration to America, but with the passage of time they were able to save enough money to purchase a large tract of land in the Old Dominion commonwealth and they were decidedly successful in their various business enterprises.

Mr. and Mrs. William H. Jackson became the parents of eight children, concerning whom the following brief data are here incorporated.
