Born on 13 March 1737.
He was the son of General William Henry Kerr, 4th Marquess of Lothian and Lady Caroline Darcy.
He married Elizabeth Fortescue, daughter of Chichester Fortescue and Hon. Elizabeth Wesley, on 15 July 1762 at Ireland.
He died on 4 January 1815 at age 77.

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He succeeded as the 7th Lord Kerr of Nisbet, Langnewtoun and Dolphinstoun [S., 1633] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 8th Lord Jedburgh [S., 1622] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 5th Marquess of Lothian [S., 1701] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Ancrame [S., 1633] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 5th Viscount of Briene [S., 1701] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 5th Earl of Ancram [S., 1701] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Ker of Newbottle, Oxnam, Jedburgh, Dolphinstoun and Nisbet [S., 1701] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 6th Earl of Lothian [S., 1631] on 12 April 1775.1 He succeeded as the 6th Lord Ker of Newbattle [S., 1631] on 12 April 1775.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1776.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1777.1 He was Colonel of the 1st Horse Guards between 1777 and 1789.1 He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1778 and 1790.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1782.1 He gained the rank of General in 1796.1 He was Colonel of the 11th Dragoons between 1798 and 1813.1 He was Colonel of the 2nd Dragoons between 1813 and 1815.1
