About William Hickman Johnson
Came to Missouri in 1860 to settle in Laclede County, Missouri. Mr. Johnson was a farmer and cattleman and owned a 200 acre farm. He was on the Union's side during the Civil War. He didn't believe in slavery but his wife wanted a slave girl to help with the work, so they had a girl for several years and when the war was over, Mr. Johnson told her she was free to go if she wanted but she stayed with them until she married. Mr. Johnson's wife, Mattie Casey Johnson was a very religious person which was why she gave Bible names to many of her sons.
