William George Hervey Jolliffe, 4th Baron Hylton of Hylton was born on 2 December 1898.
He was the son of Hylton George Hylton Jolliffe, 3rd Baron Hylton of Hylton and Lady Alice Adeliza Hervey. He married Lady Perdita Rose Mary Asquith, daughter of Raymond Asquith and Katharine Frances Horner, on 14 January 1931.

• Educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.
• Served in the First World War
• Educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.
• Aide-de-Camp to the Governor-General of Canada between 1921 and 1923.
• Gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Coldstream Guards.
• He was Brigade Major of the 142nd (6th London) Infantry Brigade between 1931 and 1936.
• Held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Somerset
• He gained the rank of DAQMG between 1939 and 1941 in the London District.
• He was AQMG of the War Office in 1942.
• Appointed Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.)
• He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Jolliffe on 26 May 1945.
• Held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset between 1949 and 1967
