Biography

All facts in this biography sourced from the NEHGR vol 75 article Otober 1921 "Genealogical Research in England: Clarke-Cooke alias Carew - Kerrich" by G. Andrews Moriarty, Jr. starting on page 273 with the Kerrich section starting on page 290 and this William Kerrich on page 301.[1]

William Kerrich was probably born about 1540, likely in Saxtead, Suffolk as most Kerrich family records appeared in that parish at that time (NEHGR vol 75 primary sources such as wills, Feet of Fines etc generally spell the parish as Saxsted).

He married a Margery Unknown (currently with a presumably incorrect last name of "Kerrich" on wikitree) probably about 1565 based on estimated birth years of their older children. Baptism records for their 2 youngest daughters have been found so are known specifically.

William and Margery had these known children:

  1. Child: Isabel Kerrich
  2. Child: Margaret Kerrich
  3. Child: Mary Kerrich
  4. Child: Rose Kerrich baptized 13 Apr 1572 at Saxtead.
  5. Child: Margery Kerrich baptized 6 Jul 1574 at Saxtead.

His father in his will directed that his eldest son, John, to whom he devised his lands and houses in Saxsted, Earl-Soham, and Framlingham which had been owned by John's grandfather, should pay to William L70, devised to William a tenement in Earl-Soham, required William to pay for the house in which he dwelt for half a year after his (the testator's) decease, and bequeathed to William and his daughter various articles of household stuff, with livestock, money, etc.

The nuncupative Will of William Kerrich of Saxtead (co. Suffolk), declared 28 March 1593. Executrix: his wife, and to her half his goods. Remainder to his children (not named). Witnesses: Richard Chamberly, John Wyth. Proved 1 April 1593 by the executrix. (Archdeaconry of Suffolk (Ipswich), book 34, fo. 461).

William was buried at Saxtead 30 Mar 1593.
