the Lamptons were refugees from Virginia, but they carried an even higher distinction, a shadowy claim to British nobility; family legend held that Benjamin's father William had left England after a fight with his father, the earl of Durham. The Lamptons often acted the role of gentry, whether or not they had the property to back up the claim.
