About William Lane, Free Settler “Jupiter” 1823

Death Notice published in the "Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal" of Saturday 16 June 1855:

"Died. On the 9th instant, at the residence of his son, John T. Lane, Clifton Grove, Orange, William Lane, Esq., J.P., of Orton Park, Bathurst, in the sixty-third year of his age. "

An article, "Wesleyan Local Preachers. A Convention" from the "Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal" of Saturday 13 April 1895, describes Mr William Lane of Orton Park:

"...in the methodist cause in Bathurst about 53 years ago. At that time there was but one ordained Minister in the whole district, and one local preacher. This was Mr. William Lane, of Orton Park, who was one of the best he (the speaker) had ever heard. Mr. William Tom, or as he was called/ Parson Tom, was also here, but he would never allow himself to be called a local preacher. "

Published as part of the article "Electioneering Movement" in "The Sydney Morning Herald" of Wednesday 12 July 1848:

"The CHAIRMAN then put Mr. Bligh's amendment to the meeting, when nearly a third of those present held up their hands in favour of Mr. Darvall. The original resolution, that Mr. Lord was the most fit and proper person to represent tho county was then put, and at least two-thirds of those present held up their hands in his favour, and there can be very little doubt that unless another, and very popular candidate starts, Mr. Lord's re-election is secure ; during the meeting frequent calls were made on Mr. William Lane, J.P., of Orton Park, to allow himself to be put in nomination, he was presently surrounded by a host of friends, which looked rather ominous, but he declined the honour."
