About William C Lane
Birth: 1820 Death: Jun. 8, 1892
Sellers "History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 395, states that he thought William was the son of Osborne Lane, but this is incorrect, he was a grandson of Osborne.
According to Marty Grant, he doesn't know who Williams parents are, But there seem to be only two strong suspects. Alexander Lane and John Lane, both sons of Osborne. Both Alexander and John had sons that were the same age - one was William C. Lane and the other Benjamin Lane. Although there is no conclusive proof as to which brother was Williams father, I too am leaning toward John.
William Lane might have served in the Civil War. His son, James M. Lane enlisted in Gregg's Battery, Co. D., Manigaulte's Battalion Artillery, and a "William Lane" was in the same Company. This is either William C. Lane or his son William Joseph Lane. They are the only two Williams who were of age.
William C. Lane was dismissed from the Antioch Baptist Church in January 1868 (no reason given), though it was likely so he could transfer to the Marion Church. In February 1868, William was recieved as a member of the Marion Baptist Church.
William C. Lane had twenty known children from his two marriages. They are all proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records.
The following children born before 1857 are from Williams first marriage to Elizabeth. The rest are his and Olive's.
