About William "Falling River" Lawson, Sr.

William Lawson was born ca. 1680 in Brunswick County, Virginia. He died before 4 February 1754 in Bedford County, Virginia.

  • n.b. parents and marriages are not proven. Some researchers believe William Lawson was born around 1680 in Virginia. Children's parentage / dates of birth etc. is also murky. Very little documented data has been found.

DNA evidence as of March 2012 seems to suggest the "Falling River Lawsons" are not related to the New Kent VA Lawsons. Therefore the Geni tree no longer shows that connection. "There are a number of Lawsons that can document their line back to William Lawson of Falling River and their Halogroup is I1. This would indicate that William Lawson is not related to the Roland Lawson line that we find in the Tidewater Area of VA.". (http://boards.ancestry.com.au/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=6719&p=surnames...)

Marriage:

  1. Unknown [Rodgers?]

Family Notes

Speculation: -There is speculation that William Lawson married Isabella Kenndy in Richmond County, Virginia, daughter of John Kennedy. Various spelling, Kenny, Kenney, Kenndy. (D.R. #1 page 53. Also "Swinney"- page 51 Wills of Rappahannock Co., Va. 1646-1692, page 51- Will of Kenny 17 January 1676). However, after further research it has been found that this William Lawson that married Isabella died in Richmond County, VA before 7 May 1701. See Richmond County, Virginia Lawsons.

Surnames: Lawson of Falling River

The William Lawson of the Falling River Lawsons did not marry Isabel Kenny the dates are way off. This is proven. It has not been proven that he is a son of John Lawson who married Judith or has the Lawsons futher back been proven to be the family of the Falling River William. If you have proof I would like to see it. Caro

In the 1730 records of Goochland County, VA the following Lawsons (or Losson) were listed in the records: - Jonas and Elizabeth, John, William and David. Elizabeth is shown as Jonas' wife in Order Book 3, page 113, dated 19 September 1732.

In the Goochland Co. VA Order Book 3, Page 110, dated August 1732 there is mention a William Lawson Sen. which implies there are two William Lawsons living at this time.

David Lawson and Ann Harvey, a son named James, born 31 July 1760. Baptized 17 August 1760. Page 58 in ³The Douglas Register.²

Goochland County, Virginia Deed and Will Book 8, 1759-1765, pages 116 and 117: - Will of John Bostick, gave to his godson, Jonas Lawson, son of David and Anne Lawson his 200 acres of land where he lived. Made David Lawson his executor and gave to him his stock and household goods. Witnesses were James George and Thomas Poor. Will dated 6 December 1749 and recorded 20 January 1761.

Jonas Lawson and Mary Nash, a son named James, born 3 Aug. 1767. Baptized 15 Nov. 1767. Page 79 in ³The Douglas Register².

Goochland County, Virginia Deed and Will Book 9, 1765-1769, pages 105-106: - A deed made 31 October 1767 between Jonas Lawson Sr. and David Lawson Sr. of the County of Goochland and William Harrison of the same County for the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds, deeded four hundred acres of land in Goochland County to Harrison. It being a tract of parcel of land lying and being in Goochland County on the branches of the Little Bird Creek whereon the said Jonas and David Lawson now live and dwell and being part of two surveys taken up and patented by Jonas Lawson Sr. and part of a survey taken up and patented by David Lawson Sr. Bounded by the lines of Col. John Payne, George Cloudas, Thomas Massie, George Barelay and Jonas Lawson Jr. Signed Jonas X (his mark) Lawson Sr. and David X (his mark) Lawson Sr. Witnesses William George, John Britt, Obadiah Daniel, Jonas Lawson Jr. and George C (his mark) Cloudas. Recorded 17 November 1767 and it stated that Ann Lawson, wife of David Lawson Sr., being first privately examined, relinquished her right of Dower and was admitted to record.

St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, Vestry Book, 1744-1850 23 December 1767 Vestry Meeting, page 103, Susanna Williams to be paid to David Lawson (gave no details).

This implies that Jonas and his family were living in Goochland as late as 1767 when they moved to Bedford County, VA.

The Tithes for 1750-1754 Lunenburg County, VA implies that William Lawson of Falling River family were living in Lunenburg County (later Bedford). Records implies that John, Jonas and Bartholomew were his sons.

Bedford County, VA 1763 Tithes list Wm., John B.E., Jonas and David. This is the first time I have found John B.E. Lawson. It looks like from the records of Lunenburg and Bedford that Black Eye may have been the son of John Lawson and grandson of William Lawson of Falling River.

Continuing... Thought I would post this bit of documentation while I am
talking about the Thomas, son of John Isham, son of David, son of Jonas Lawson
family. I doubted James was actually a son of this David and Ann Harvey
Lawson due to the great age difference between him and John, and the fact
David would have been 50 years old and Ann 45 (about) when he was born. But
The Douglas Register Goochland VA, Family History Library book #975.5455 v2d
page 236 states "Baptized Dec.14 1776. p.101 David Lawson & Ann Harvey a son

Records. Note: Marriages not recorded by Rev. Douglas were indicated by the
birth registry. Date here given, unless otherwise specified, is birth date of
first child shown in this register, not necessarily first child of family.
James later went to Hardin county KY and to Gentry county MO. In 1850 his
sons, Henry, Samuel and Jacob and families are in Hardin, KY.

I have listed one son only for Jonas - David - and for David's children I have

Elizabeth. I have no documentation on David and William, sons of David and
Ann Harvey Lawson. Anyone?
