William Lindsay was the second of eight children born to William Geddes Lindsay and Christina Howie in Scotland. His parents joined the Mormon church when he was an infant. He worked in coal mines as a child. In 1862 with his recently widowed mother and siblings migrated to Utah, the latter part was done in handcart wagons as part of the Homer Duncan Company of saints. William and his family became some of the earliest settlers of the Wasatch County area. In 1866 and 1867 William was enlisted in the Blackhawk Indian War under the command of his John Murray Murdock. In 1868, William married Mary Mair, also of Scotland and daughter of Allan Mair and Mary Murdoch. The lived east of Heber at "Lindsay's Dell" near Center Creek where they farmed and raised their 10 children. Later with his family William moved into Heber City and shortly after at the age of 58 was called on a 2 year mission to Great Britain. William was keen on writing; both poetry and also journal writing. He also wrote a cherished and detailed autobiography of his life in his latter years. William was preceded in death by Mary in 1916 and remarried to another widower Sarah Jane Murdoch Rasband. William Lindsay passed away at the age of 85.
