William Chester Malcolm

William Chester Malcolm William was born in Scotland, Ontario, on August 21, 1885, the son of Harry and Elsie (Durham). He moved with his parents and three siblings to Innisfail, Northwest Territories in 1890. These territories did not become Alberta until 1905. William was a farmer all of his life, settling in the Huxley district. He was an active community member belonging to farm and church organizations; church and school boards. Chester’s greatest passion was birds. He began collecting eggs at the age of ten and continued until his death. He was only one of two registered egg collectors in Alberta up until his death. He had amassed quite a collection of eggs by his death. Unfortunately, he did not will this collection to any family members so the Alberta Government claimed it. The collection was divided between Edmonton and Calgary; Calgary first placed it in the Calgary Zoo and Edmonton’s became a part of a larger collection in the museum. Both egg displays, to this day, have not acknowledged the donor. Chester was also an avid gardener, growing many species of trees, flowers and shrubs that definitely were not native to the province or climate. He believed in the preservation of species and spent his life working toward this goal; mostly by passing on his thought and ideas to the next generations.
