About William Martin
Biography
William Martin, Merchant was born in 1720, in New Kent Parish, Virginia, in Colonial America. His parents were William Martin, Sugar / Ship Merchant and Margret Martin.
He was born an Episcopalian, Church of England, into a wealthy family. He lived and traveled with his father and mother, extensively, finally settling in London, England. At a young age, while living in London, he joined the Friends Religion/ Quaker, most likely because of the conflict of interest in slavery, he chose not to go into business with his father and brother, learning that trade, the very lucrative Martin Shipping and Sugar Sales business. Martin Shipping had business ports in The West Indies, Burmuda, Edinburgh, Scotland, Philadelphia, and Virginia and its headquarters was in London, England. He worked hard and chose an honorable trade of simply being a tailor and farmer. At age 16 he moved to Philadelphia, PN after learning the tailor trade and married at a young age.
He died a year before his father, most likely because of this and his religious beliefs he or his children are not mentioned in his father's will. Some of the Orphan children may have been sent to either London or Virginia relatives. We may find them on the Census, records. All Children were born in Pennsylvania.Not mentioned on Friend's Meetings Reports, so they must not have been active in the Quaker Religion soon after they were married. The children were listed in Court Probate Records.
William married Miriam Martin on April 26, 1737, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Together they had the following children:
Hannah Martin;
Miriam Martin;
Enoch Martin;
Jane Bartram;
Mary Martin;
William John Martin;
John Martin, tailor of Philadelphia.
William Martin died in 1747 and his wife, Miriam, in 1748 in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, US. Abraham Davis Rich Court-approved Guardian Thomas and Hannah Lewis, Hannah was Miriam Morgan Martin's sister. of the Orphan Children [https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000199875372852], Guardian Thomas and Hannah Morgan Lewis, Hannah was Miriam Morgan Martin's sister.
Tailor and part-time farmer in Whitpain Twp. ;. There were, however, Quaker <Martin> families of Goshen MM in the environs of Bradford By the time of the children's birth, and his and his wife death they were not active Quaker's, no reports of the births or deaths found with the Friend's Meetings Reports. Only report is their marriage.
~• might be a descendant of Thomas Martin, Quaker immigrant
I say this as there is anecdotal evidence that his orphaned children may have been placed w/Goshen MM after William and his wife's early deaths.. a young Miriam Martin (their dau.) requested removal from Goshen to Gwynedd ; and John, Mary and Miriam appear in an index for Goshen; these forgoing are sib' names of William and his wife. {MMvB Aug. 2022} Furthermore we see, contemporary to Miriam's departure for Gwynedd, a marriage of Caleb Martin at Goshen. This coincidence suggests to me that, when William died, some of his children may have gone to Martin's relatives at Goshen. Might Caleb's parents foster Miriam and/or her sibs? It would be logical for other Martins to take up the slack when the six young children were left w/o support.
