visited greenville county library 1/19/08 Mauldin-Reed Families book- The William Harris Mauldin in this book is not mine- I think this Benjamin Franklin Mauldin, son of Joab and Sarah--maybe my Wm Harris's cousin-- they list BF's line with Joab Mauldin 1770-1818 with his father being John--I made some copies of this book!

Life with William Harrison Mauldin Mid 1800's , Jones County, Mississippi
William Harrison Mauldin had eight children by Nancy Dacus in South Carolina. One child was my great grandfather Lemuel Harrison. Nancy died during childbirth of her eighth child. I have a copy of her death certificate. It is believed that she was a Cherokee Indian. After her death, William Harrison married Charity Welborn and moved the family from South Carolina to Jones County, Mississippi in 1849. He homesteaded the farm that I grew up on by building a log cabin there in 1850. This cabin is still in excellent condition and can be seen by using Google maps, near the crossroads of US 84 and Hwy 29. After moving their eight kids from South Carolina to Mississippi, William Harrison and Charity had 10 more kids, and raised them in the two-room log cabin. I spent countless hours in the log cabin wondering what life must have been like. We used the cabin for a hay barn and it also served as our Boy Scout Troop 53 Headquarters. In the mid 1800s, Jones County was a lot more liberal / progressive then it is today. My ancestors were Universalists (Unitarians) surrounded by Baptists and Methodists in the rest of Mississippi and the south in general.
Lemuel Harrison and many of his family are buried in Our Home Universalist Church cemetery, which is also near the intersection of 84 and 29. After Mississippi seceded from the US to fight the Civil War, Jones County seceded from Mississippi and set up a separate country, The Free State of Jones, led by Confederate deserter Newton Knight. Some of my ancestors joined Knight's army to fight the Confederates while others joined the Union Army to also fight the Confederates and others were in the Confederate Army. Historian Victoria Bynum's books, The Free State of Jones and The Long Shadow of the Civil War captures this interesting history. Vikki is a cousin by marriage. Lemuel Edward Mauldin III (1943) Written February 14, 2010 copied 5/10/2010-- Backgoround: Leonardo Andrea (1889 - 1966) was a South Carolina Genealogist who compiled a rich collection of Genealogical Data focused on the Southern States. This collection, which can be found at the University of South Carolina Library in Columbia, consists of 1029 folders and 825 surnames. Included are materials such as genealogical reports, transcripts of Bible records, pedigree charts, and clippings. Another part of the collection contains his extensive files of genealogical correspondence. Elise Mauldin Paget, Anderson, S.C wrote the Letter below (which is in the Andrea Collection) to Mr. Andrea on July 11, 1952. Mr. Aaron Mauldin who has copied 189 pages of the collection related to the surname Mauldin sent this letter to me. Several of Ms Paget’s letters are in the collection. I have deciphered Ms Paget’s handwritten letter to the best of my ability and have also included the original. ------------------------------------------------- My Dearest Mr. Andrea, I do not mean to make a nuisance of myself. You may be all wrapped up in your Wyatt book and do not care to go into Mauldins again now, but I would like you to have this information. I am 79 years old, and a real shut-in and I want to pass anything I have on to someone who might not get it any other way. And, the letter I enclose is about 3 years old. The John Mauldin in whom it was written kept it 2 years, and then gave it to another Mauldin who sent it to me. I’m sending it to you because I noticed the name Wyatt. An old Mr. Robert Pickens of near Easley who lived to be a hundred, had a paper from his father handed down to him giving the names of the Rev. soldiers buried in Pickens’s Family Cemetery. Rucker and Laban Mauldin were on this list I may be mistaken, but I think he told me they had all fought in the Battle of Guilford Court House in N.C. I have no dates of anything. But I do believe my Blacksmith John was closely related to all these Pickens’s Mauldins. Faithfully yours, Elise Mauldin Paget July 11, 1952 704 B’l’v’d, Anderson, SC [attachment]
