Residence Place: Westminster, London, England Gender: Male Christening Date: 20 Jan 1720 Christening Date (Original) 20 Jan 1720 Christening Place: Westminster, St. James, Middlesex, England Birth Date: 14 Jan 1720 Father's Name: William Maynard Mother's Name: Elizabeth Source: "England Births and Christening, 1538-1975" urls: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3G3-BRP?from=lynx1UIV8... f=LYZS-RJ9 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3G3-BR5 William Maynard emigrated from England to America on the ship Brothers at age 16 about 1736.
William Maynard, Sr. served as a private in the French and Indian War under Captain Robert Spotwood's Company. Mustered in service 9-2-1755. Described as 28 yrs old (b. 1727), 5'6" tall, occupation-shoemaker, from England, enlisted at Williamsburg, VA, build: well-made, scar of lip, with thick dark brown hair.
There have been two different years of birth for William Maynard. One was 1720 and the other was 1727. In order to reconcile the two different but similar years of birth, a midpoint of these two years could be used to more accurately identify his year of birth. Since 1724 is the midpoint between 1720 and 1727, it would be more accurate to use 1724 as the best approximation for the year of William Maynard's birth.
According to oral tradition, William's father was Lt. Robert Maynard who was the slayer of the pirate Blackbeard. Source: Charles Maynard (email: cemaynard@frontiernet.net) in a message posted to ancestry.com under the section Message Boards>Surnames>Maynard on June 18, 2006.
This tradition has been disproven. According to family legend William Maynard, Sr. may have been a son of Robert Maynard born c. 1684 and died January 1, 1751. Robert Maynard was a lieutenant and later captain in the Royal Navy and Governor Alexander Spotswood of the colony of Virginia gave him the command of two sloops, Ranger and Jane which were based at the docks of Hampton, Virginia. Robert was most famous for defeating the infamous English pirate Blackbeard in battle at Ocracoke Inlet off the coast of North Carolina on November 22, 1718. Robert retired on the outskirts of Deal, England at Great Mongeham, which is a village and civil parish in East Kent, which is a county in southeast England and is where he died Jan. 1, 1750 at age 67. Robert's final resting place is in the churchyard of Great Mongeham in Kent, near the cinque port of Deal. His will was made 12th October 1750 and proved on 28th March 1751.
