William McCune was the son of Daniel and Rebecca (Nichols) McCune. He was the grandson of Peter McCune. In 1866, William McCune married Mary Jane Reed. She was the daughter of Levi James Reed Sr. William grew up in Central VA, now WV. He listed his home as Calhoun County, when he enlisted in Company B., 9th WV Infantry, during the Civil War.

He was wounded during the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864 and was discharged in that same year. In 1880, the couple purchased land just below where the Camp Creek bridge now crosses the Elk River.
