About William McKerlie
Although lacking documented proof it is believed that William grew up in the Nelson region of Halton County son of William and Nancy (Rose) McKerlie. Sometime before 1838 he met and married Eliza McCormick of Eramosa, Wellington Co location unknown with who they had two children, Ann (unmarried) and Helen(second wife of her aunts husband Francis Barclay) before they appear to have relocated to the Dorchester area of Middlesex County in 1842. The reason for this relocation might be due to the land petition of his uncle John's land petition in 1801 a short distance away. They proceeded to have 9 more children two of which passed before reaching adulthood.
William was an active member of his community serving as Deputy Reeve of Westminster Township for over a decade and presided over the founding of Westminster Mutual one of the two oldest such companies in Ontario.
