About William Mead, Sr.

Parents unknown. Seen as the son of Rev Matthew Mead & Elizabeth Mead, but their son William Mead (died young). And this William Mead was not the same as William Mead (an English Quaker) William Mead (1627-1713). That William Mead was a brother of the Rev. Matthew Mead. Be aware that a number of publications and "family lore" link this William Mead as a son of the Rev. Matthew Mead but without confirmation.

Title: Moses Rhodes/Mary Mead Loudoun Co., Va.
'The ancestry.com site indicates that the Moses Rhodes who wed Mary Mead was born in Chester Co., Pa. The Rhodes family of Marple, Pa. were Quakers, but, if Mary Mead's husband was to have come from Marple in Chester Co., Pa., why do the Quakers in Loudoun Co., Va. condemn her for "marrying out of unity" (Her husband, Moses Rhodes, could not have been a Quaker.)? Is this information erroneous? Suspect a greater possibility that the husband of Mary Mead was actually Moses Rhodes of Stafford County, Virgina (son of John Rhodes of said County. See Will of John Rhodes, Stafford County, 1748).'

(later)

'Mary Mead, daughter of William Mead & Ellen Worrell, was born 1732 Lower Makefield Twp, Bucks Co, PA and died 1787 Loudoun Co, VA.'
(later) 'The Quaker faith continued for a very short time in this family. Daughter of Moses Rhodes & Mary Mead was Hannah Rhodes, who married Robert Mead. Robert was the son of John Mead & Mary Abrell....and John was the brother of William Mead, the father of Mary Mead. That made Hannah and Robert cousins, so they got kicked out of the church as well. John and Robert had another brother, Samuel, who was disowned for fighting in the Spanish American war. ' (see http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes/mrslaron2002 )

Posted: 10 Sep 2005 1:02AM GMT ' Family oral tradition hands down that we are related to the Reverend Matthew Mead of London THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ERROR { read the genealogy: Meades in Buckinhamshire }, who was an independent preacher, a puritan, and that his descendents no more than 2 generations down the line were Quakers. BUT even though Matthew wasn't a Quaker, his own brother, William Mead, who was only 2 years older than Matthew, was involved in the very founding of the Quaker faith! So, I always keep that in the back of my head, that children and nieces and nephews could have just followed Uncle William! As far as the Rhodes connection....my Robert Mead, who married Moses's daughter Hannah Rhodes, is said to have brought slaves to Kentucky from Virginia to help him with his plantation....then sent them back or gave them freedom...not sure. So, he had been a Quaker at one point until they got the boot for marrying cousins. And since he WAS a Quaker, I thought maybe Father-in-Law Rhodes was not a Quaker but Hannah had converted somehow! I don't know. ' ... Maybe someday I'll be able to do the actual work to substantiate the rumors.' (Lisa Anderson)
