Wm. Newell was born in Warren county, Indiana, December 4, 1937, and came with his parents to Birmingham, Iowa, in 1847, where he resided for many years. He died at Syracuse, Nebraska, May 3, 1918, his age being 80 years and 5 months.
He was united in marriage to Isabelle Eichelberger, February 21, 1861, who died in July 1911, a few months after celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Seven children were born to this union, four sons and three daughters. Two daughters, Mrs. Lettie Moss and Mrs. Nellie Baird, preceded the parents in death.
Those who survive are: Mrs. Jennie Newell of Sebastopol, Cal.; Frank Newell of McCook, Neb.; Fred of Denver, Col.; Crate of San Antonio, Texas; Croy of Lincoln, Neb. There are also four grandchildren and one great grandchild, and two sisters and two brothers.
He enlisted in Company H, 3rd Iowa Calvary in 1863, and served two years in the Civil war, leaving a young wife and two children at home. Five months of that time was spent in Andersonville Prison, where he endured many hardships.
The funeral service was held in Lincoln, Neb., May 7th. After a very impressive sermon, the services were in charge of the G. A. R., of which he was a member, which was very appropriate and the singing by those old comrades was certainly grand. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful Wyuka cemetery by the side of his wife. The end was peaceful. He was ready and willing to go.
