ELIZABETH VERNEY (c.1558-March 1592)

Elizabeth Verney, although said in some genealogies to have been the daughter of Sir Henry Verney and have had Queen Elizabeth as her godmother, was in fact the daughter of Hugh Verney of Fairfield, Somerset. Her first husband was William Palmer of Parham, Sussex (c.1554-December 24, 1586). Although numerous other children are listed online, they had only four: Thomas, (June 24, 1574-c.1605), Catherine (1579-September 30, 1609), William (1583-April 1585), and Sarah (1586/7-1633). Elizabeth was never married to John Palmer, younger brother of her first husband.

• Sir Thomas Palmer was a Freeman Mercers Co. in London. In 1547 he was Justice of the Peace in Sussex. In 1553 he was knighted for his services to the Earl of Arundel. In 1559-1560 He was Sheriff of Surrey & Sussex. William married Elizabeth Verney. Elizabeth Verney was a Godchild of Queen Elizabeth I. Sir Thomas Palmer became her guardian in 1559. She was betrothed to Sir Thomas Palmer's Son William when she was 14. Elizabeth was the sole Heiress of the Verney's Fairfield Estate
