About William B Parker
Birth: May 16, 1830 Connellsville Fayette County Pennsylvania, USA Death: May 17, 1916 Le Grand Marshall County Iowa, USA
William was mustered in as a Sergeant in Co. F, 9th Iowa Infantry in August 1861. He distinguished himself as a hero during the Battle of Pea Ridge (Ark). He himself led his troops twice to the steps of the famous "Elkhorn Tavern" against very severe Confederate fire and resistance. During the second charge to take the tavern he was shot twice on the steps to the famous building and they successfully captured and held the building. He remained with his outfit throughout the War being promoted twice to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was at several decisive battles during the war including the battle of Lookout Mountain. After the War he took part in the white settlement of the Black Hills of South Dakota during the time of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane. William was a druggist by trade and everyone called him "Doctor Parker". He ended his years in the Old Soldiers home near LeGrand, IA.
