About William Pearson Payne

Nota Bene: 17 jan 2017 dfc

Just recently transcribed William Pearson Payne's Will... See those documents before adding any additional relationships to William Pearson Payne such as parents.

The deposition by his son in law Ambrose Baxter was most enlightening. Susan Alsop was widow of William G Alsop - and her father in law gave Susan and William Pearson land as part of her dowry. Susan had two sons by William G Alsop - then she had two sons, Pearson Floder and Jesse Payne - and two daughters - Susan Baxter and Elizabeth Black - with Pearson Payne.

Based on DNA evidence - William Pearson Payne's line is most related to the Payne family in Fauquier County.

Unfortunately - at this time - all of those folks are a genetic distance such that the common ancestor would probably be William Pearson's grandfather... It leaves the issue of parentage rather unsettled for the time being, however - further records searching at Fauquier might yield some tidbit that might connect William Pearson to that line.

Retired Army Colonel Brooke Payne wrote a book entitled "Paynes Of Virginia" in 1938 and he loosely groups all the early Payne settlers and planters in Virginia into four groups. Lacking the tools provided by DNA evidence - he cites that he frankly wasn't sure about the group that inhabits Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania.

We can safely say now that those Payne families are definitely connected to the Fauquier branch - which stemmed from the earliest Lancaster county Payne family. But - unfortunately - I lack any tangible records that give Christian names for William Pearson Payne parents.
