About William Powell Phillips
Served in the Civil War, Company B, 14th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry Volumteers, Commanded by Capt. James W. Davidson. Enlisted June 08, 1863 honorably discharged September 13, 1865 at Louisville, KY. He was wounded at Pumpkinvine Creek, GA while on skrimish line and was struck with a ball above his left ear which cut across the side of his head and was "scamped" across the face just under the cheek bone, the ball making a wound of considerable size, the size of the ball. For the rest of his life he remained deaf in the left ear and was frequently lame brought on the fatigue in heavy marching. (Source: Civil War Pension Papers of William Powell Phillips). The 14 Kentucky Infantry saw combat 25 May 1864 at New Hope Church, GA. Names used for this combat were the Battle of Dallas, New Hope Church and Pumpkinvine Creek.
