Came to Philadelphia in 1750, then went to Virginia where he lived with the family of Rev. Samuel Davies. He had no children but raised his nephew, William Richardson Davie. Married Nancy Craighead in 1759. His tombstone in Waxhaw Cemetery reads "He lived to purpose; he preached with fidelity; he prayed for his people; and being dead he speaks. Born 1729 at Egremont, England; died July 20, 1771."
