About William Robert Cann

Excerpt from a letter from Uncle Laurie to John, dated January 15, 1987.

"Emigrated with George and I am sorry......(?"to say that I can't remember") what year it was. Bill was born in 1900 and I have always thought they emigrated in 1920. You see, George and Bill had become very friendly with Bill Dymond and they used to get about together. All three planned to go to Canada together, but Bill Dymond fell ill and couldn't go. Not only that, I think the fact that he had fallen for Flora had something to do with it! Well, unlike George, Bill decided it was too damned cold in Canada and soon hopped it to California. You asked who came home for the Golden Wedding*. George came, together with Albert and his wife Lilian and their two boys in that summer of 1934. Bill came on his own later in the year. As far as I know, Bill's wife Mary had one child by a previous marriage but none by William. Incidentally, I can't tell you how old he was when he died of cancer of the prostate gland. I believe it was around 60."

  • The Golden Wedding referred to was the 50th wedding anniversary of John and Emma Cann.

William Robert Cann was listed on the passenger manifest of the "S.S.Berengaria," which sailed from Southampton on the 16th of January, 1935, bound for New York. He is listed as being a 34 year old single English farmer from Britain, able to read and write, and his last permanent residence says "Chino, California." This seems to have been William's second trip across the Atlantic, because he traveled once before that n 1921 (arriving March 29, aboard the Minnedosa) and met with his brother, Albert, in Winnipeg.
