About William Robertson of Manchester Parish
William Robertson (1716-1774)
William Robertson, son of William Robertson, husband of Sarah (Townes) Robertson (daughter of James Towns and Ann Pride) — married about 1730 in Henrico, Virginia, Colony of Virginia. Died 1774 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, Virginia.
Notes
Robertson Family Records, published by J. Montgomery Seaver, 1928, is a fraudulent work, it states "Scotch Will was the grandson of John Robertson, Bailey of Edinburgh. This Wlm. Robertson signed his will with an "X". It seems likely that Mr. Seaver combined this William with another William Robertson, "Scotch Billie", who actually was educated in Scotland.
In Colonial Families of the United States of America, Volume I it states "Scotch Will was the grandson of John Robertson, Bailey of Edinburgh and son of William Robertson, Naval Officer and Reciever, District of York River and Secretary of Governor Spottswood; and other sources have him as the founder of William and Mary College- all in error!
