"a remarkable man joined the Voortrekkers and was the first in the 1840's to start a school in the newly founded Transvaal Town of Potchefstroom. He later became a big game hunter, famous for shooting elephants. Trekking into the Kalahari Desert and beyond, he reached Lake Ngami in 1851,soon after David Livingstone. Of Herculean size and strength, he later sellted in the little village of Rustenburg, where the Boers appointed him Landdrost. A further compliment came when in 1856 they decided to draw up the first Grondwet or Constitution, and made William Robinson chairman of the committe cahrged with the task. Two years later the Constitution was finished and put into force. William was back in public life again in 1872, when he stood for election as President of the South African Republic, agaist President Burgers, losing by one vote. As a man in late middle age he retired form being Landdrost of Rustenburg, and went farming at Vaalkop on the Eastern Highveldnear the present twon of Bethal..died as the very last of the original settlers. He was educated in Cradock in the Eastern Cape, and founded the first school catering for the children of emigrant Boers, in Potchefstroom. He bacame a famous hunter in Central Africa and was later appointed Landdrost (magistrate) at Rustenburg. He was Chairman of the committee which drew up the Constitution of the South African Republic in 1856 and in 1872 he he ran for President of the Transvaal but was defeated by T.F. Burgers. He was the last survivor of the original 1820 Settlers. He was an older brother of sir Joseph Robinson.

He was educated at Cradock where he became a teacher at the school in 1838. In 1840 he established the first school at Potchefstroom. He became a famous hunter in Central Africa particularly in the lake Ngami area of present day Botswana and was appointed Magistrate of Rustenburg.

In 1856 he was Chairman of the Committee which drew up the constitution for the Transvaal Republic. He was a candidate in the Presidential election in1872, but was defeated by the Rev. T. F. Burgers. He married twice. A Miss Schoombee and hes second wife was a Miss Grobler.

Before the Anglo-Boer War (1880 - 1881) he farmed on 'Vaalkop' close to Middleburg, Transvaal. Before the second Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902) he moved to Middleburg where he was cared for by a son. He gradually became completely blind but his later years were considerably eased by a regular financial allowance from his brother Sir J B Robinson.
