About William Russell
Biography
Rev William Russell (1725–1775) was the eldest son of Rev William Russell (1690-1761) and Mary Pierpont (1702-1740) of Middletown, CT.[1] [2] He was born 23 Jul 1725 in Middletown.[1][3] He graduated Yale College in 1745.[2] He was a Berkeley scholar and tutor at Yale from Jun 1749 to 1750.[2] He joined his father's church in Jun 1749.[1][2] He was the pastor of the First Church of Windsor from Feb 1751 until his death in 20 Apr 1775 (Note: Hale says 20 Apr 1775, Yale Bio says 17 Apr 1775 and VR say 19 Apr 1775).[1][4][5] He was ordained on 24 Jul 1754.[1][6] During his initial years there he oversaw a contentious debate regarding the building of the meetinghouse and was able to find a resolution to the issue.[1] His estate was inventoried and valued at £994 and included 130 books.[1]
He married first to Abigail Andrews of Milford daughter of Samuel Andrews who was the mother of his children:[1][2]

- Col Samuel Andrew Russell (1759-1834) m/1st Lucy Munson, m/2nd Sarah Woodward, m/3 Susan Woodward. (NSSAR#P-283245/DAR#A098524). He removed to Buffalo, Erie, New York.[7][8]
Rev William Russell married second to Abigail Newberry daughter of William Newberry of Wintonbury (now Bloomfield) on 18 Jan 1770. They had one child James who died in Infancy 1771. [1][2][7][8] His death notice was published in the Hartford Courant stating that he died in Windsor on 20 Apr 1775: “Pastor of the First Church of Christ in Windsor. Son of Rev. William Russell of Middletown and his mother was a daughter of Rev. Mr. Pairpont of New Haven.”[4]
