William Seely lived in Earith, Huntingdon county England. The village of Earith was served by the parish church in Bluntisham, an adjacent village. The family apparently resided in Huntingdon, the county seat for a short while as this is where Robert's baptism and two of the Seely children's burials took place.

William (christened 23 Feb 1563/4, Great Gransden; d 1614; bur 5 Jun 1614, Bluntisham) and Grace Prett (bur 15 Nov 1635, Bluntisham) Seeley. They were married 30 Sept 1584, Great Gransden.

*Note No record has been found of an Obadiah Seeley (SGS #4) being born to Robert and Mary Seeley in England. Current research indicates that Obadiah was not the son of Robert and Mary.

William was born about 1563 in Bluntisham-cum-Earith, Huntingdon, England[1] It is believed he first married Grace Prett 23 Feb 1584 at Great Gransden.[2] With Grace Prett he had son Robert.[3]

William's wife Grace, Robert's mother, died and William remarried on October 12, 1614 to Briget Hills[4], a widow with a daughter Anne who married a Fiske. William and Briget had a son William who married Margaret Brenham on January 14, 1638 - they had a daughter Margaret by 1641.

The will of William Seeley the elder, joiner, was found at the parish of Bluntisham cum Earity, a joint parish about seven miles from Huntingdon town. The will, two witnesses of which were found to be constables, was proved 4 Apr 1646 and son Robert is not named in the will. Ralph Seeley, NEHGR cited below, speculates that Robert may have received his inheritance when he went to London or at age 21 or William may not have known his whereabouts when the will was drawn up in 1641. Records of the New Haven Colony 26 Oct 1646 show Robert being given leave to return to England.[4]

Also found at the parish of Bluntisham cum Earity are a marriage record of William Seley and Bridget Hills; a marriage record of William Sealey and Margaret Brenham; and a burial record of "Grand. Seley" which might be the William Seeley mentioned in the will of William Seeley the Elder.[4] Research Notes

Robert Seely was apprenticed in the Cordwainers' Company of London on March 10, 1623 to serve seven years, but was freed between August 1, 1626 and July 17, 1627. He married Mary, the widow of Walter Mason on December 15, 1626.

The publication of the Seeley Genealogical Society cited below contradicts NEHGR and other sources on a number of critical facts yet presents no documentation for its statements. It claims William died 1614 and that Grace Prett lived until 1635. Update: note that this link goes to updated information from SGS with a thorough discussion of sources and analysis.
