About William Sheble Sickel
William was born in Philadelphia and by the timehe was 18, he was hauling hay from the city to Chester County. He did this until he was around 22. During this time, he was sleepwalking and walked out of the hayloft and broke his collarbone.
When William was 18, he entered the army: March 4, 1864. His address at this time was Fellowship New Jersey, but he enlisted in Philadelpia. Posssibly by this time he may have already met Hannah Haines, his future first wife.
Wm. served as a private under Capt. D. P. Billington, company G, 186 Regiment. He was honorably discharched the following year: August 15, 1865. This Regiment recruited in the city of Phila. from Jan.29 until May 31 of 1864. Henry Fink was the Colonel and had served as Major and Lt.Col of the 11th Regiment. When he took on the 186, he was appointed the Provost Marshall of Phila. and his Regiment naturally had provost duty. This involved maintaining law and order in the city. For info. about the duties of a Provost Marshall and his regiment see: www.civilwarhome.com/ProvostMarshal.htm. Information on this Regiment's assignment was gathered from www.pacivilwar.com/bates/html. Samuel Bates wrote a book on all of the PA civil war regiments and his book is available online at this site. If you take the time to delve into the online book, you can find Wm.'s name.
He married Hannah Haines from Burlington County, NJ, on March 5, 1868. He was 22, she was 21. One is led to believe that she was his one true love since, on his deathbed in 1916, he called out, "Hannah, I'm coming."
With Hannah, he had at least 3 children. After Hannah's death, he ended up living in Rosedale Station, Chester County, PA for that is the address given when he married May L. Veazey in 1891. Around this time, a relative passed away. Evidence suggests that it was an uncle on his mother's Sheble side since that was the surname of the relative. This Sheble relative was a box manufacturer in Philadelphia and when he died, some of his inheritance went to Wm. With that money, William bought a farm in East Longmeadow, MA. As to why someone from Phila. with a new, much younger ( by 17 years) wife from Wilmington, would have high-tailed it up to MA is an interesting question.
