SMITH, William. Per "Scarborough"; of Hawkesbury

On list of persons who came as convicts & who claimed they were free at the last General Muster, without supporting documentation (Reel 6038; SZ759 p.285)

The following is an extract from "The Second Fleet" by Michael Flynn

"William Smith (c1758 -)

William Smith alias William White was sentenced to seven years transportation

at the 15 August 1787 Wrexham (Denbigh, Wales) Great Sessions for an untraced crime.

He was held in Ruthin Gaol until July 1788 when he was sent to the Fortunee hulk at Langstone Harbour, Portsmouth,

whence he was embarked on the Scarborough transport on 30 November 1789.

By 1806, with his sentenced expired, Smith was described as a tailor.

In 1814 he was recorded as a tailor in the Windsor district and in 1828 as aged 70,

living with his wife Rebecca Smith, aged 77 (Mary Ann 1791). Both lodged with John Byrne at Cornwallis outside Windsor.

Their deaths have not been traced.

Notes: PRO HO47/7; he seems to have been uniformly referred to as Smith in the colony"

N.B. My personal viewing of the list of convicts on the microfilm of the Scarborough log

has as well as "alias White", a note "also known as Smyth". {Al Smyth}.
