South Kingston Cemeteries: Wilson Cemetery #99 William Smith died June 1, 1701, 41 years. (died in an accident.) The grave of Wm. Smith is the oldest found in S.K. in this study.

Mary Ruck Smith is the half sister of Sarah Burroughs, wife of the Rev. George Burroughs who was hanged for witchcraft in Salem in August 1692. Rebecca Nurse was hanged in July 1692 in Salem. It is noted that their son William, born in September 1692, appears to be the last of the children of William and Mary Ruck Smith to have been born in Massachusetts. The "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" reports that this family moved to Newport, Rhode Island which at that time was a haven for persons from Mass., and other New England areas, seeking escape from the mayhem of the witch trials.
