William Gordon Speechley was born on the 29th October 1877 in Darling Road, Balmain. NSW BDM Ref 1877/003828. William Gordon Speechley married Elizabeth Charlotte White on the 24th May 1897 at the Mance, 56 Johnstone Street, Annandale. The marriage certificate has witnesses, John White and Bessie White. It is possble that Bessie White is the second wife of John White as he may have married again after the death of his wife Sarah Mason in 1881. Both William and Elizabeth were 19 years old at the time of their marriage and required the consent in writing by there respective fathers. NSW BDM Ref 1897/2695 The 1899/1900 Sands Directory has W G Speechley at 13 Gladstone Street, Leichardt.
Police Gazette 5 aug 1896 Sydney.--William Gordon Speechley, of Mossglen, George Street, Marrickville, reports that about 6'30 p in. the 3rd instant, he was assaulted in Rutland-street, Strawberry Hills, and robbed of a brown leather hand-bag, marked " W.G.S.," containing about £12 in notes, gold, and silver, a rent receiptbook, and a patent pen-holder and pen, by a young man about 19 or 20 years of age, short thick set ; when running away he was joined by another man about same age, 5 feet I or 2 inches high, thick set ; dressed in dark trousers, short dark sac coat, and b ack soft felt hat, dirty looking white shirt, no collar. Can be identified by H. 0. Hoyle, of 76, Buckingham-street. Police Gazette 1901 George Wimbledon, charged with breaking and entering the dwelling-house of William Speechley, at Marrickville and stealing jewellery and clothing, etc, value £8 (recovered) has been arrested by Senior Constable Joyce and Constable A. Brown, Sydney Police.
The 1901 Sands Directory has W G Speechley at Waverly. William has no entry in the 1903 Census. From 1906 William was in Agar Street, Marrickville William was a marine engineer. William was a 3rd Engineer on the coastal trade sailing from ports such as Adelaide and MacKay in Queensland from 1900 to 1904. During this period he was possibly living in Balmain. The 1930 Electoral Roll has William, Elizabeth and Arthur & George at Agar Street. On the 1936 Electoral Roll as William Gordon Speechley and Elizabeth at 24 Agar Street Marrickville William Henry Gordon Speechley died on the 12th March 1937 in Sydney and is buried at Rookwood.
