Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in military uniform. Thought to be Private William Stanley Gilbert (serial no. 67517). Gilbert was born on 29 December 1894 in Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs Emily Gilbert (mother) 6 Collingwood Street, Nelson, New Zealand. Gilbert worked as a clerk for Loan and Mercantile before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 36th Reinforcements Specialist Company on 23 April 1918 from Wellington, New Zealand for Southampton, England. He served for one year and one hundred and twelve days in Egypt. Gilbert was discharged on 4 March 1919 as no longer physically fit for war service because of an illness he had contracted on active service.
