1820 Settler, Willson's party, sailed aboard the La Belle Alliance from the Downs on 12 February 1820 and arrived in Table Bay on 2 May 1820 and at Algoa Bay towards the end of May 1820.

His farm was named Norwood, presumably after the area of London from where he had emigrated. Due to extensive injuries received during the "Kaffir Wars" he was forced to relinquish his farm and settle in Grahamstown. In 1843 he became a share-holder in the Grahamstown, Bathurst and Kowie Shipping Company. In 1854 he was appointed Commissioner for Improving the Port of Waterloo Bay.
