About William Stewart

Son of Joseph and Sarah Gilbert Stewart, wife of Elizabeth Van Hooser and father of William Jackson. He was my 3rd great grandfather. His burial could be somewhere in Westedwardsville, Madison Co., Illinois.

Note: Think that William died in 1837, and yet his sons Levi and William Jackson felt inclined to go there. Personally think that maybe William was still live in 1839. They went there to be with their father. We can find obsolutely nothing about William, and where he lived and died from the time that he was in Madison County in 1830 until he died between then and the 1840 census that was taken in Keokuk, Iowa. Levi and William Jackson have lost track of their father William Stewart.

History - William went to Madison County, Illinois in 1811 and returned to Overton, Tennessee during War of 1812. He left his family and eventually married Rebecca. She joined the Mormon Church in 1836.

Shortly after a son, Urban Van Stewart, was born William and Elizabeth Van Hooser were separated. Finally in 1824 William submitted a divorce petition. This was submitted to the General Assembly of the State of Tennesssee in the fall of 1824. Fifty-two men signed the petition."

Rebecca Llewellyn and William moved to Fayette County, Illinois where he is found in the 1830 census. About 1834 he moved to what became Lee County, Iowa and is listed in the 1836 Territory Census there but died in 1837. His widow is listed in the 1840 census of Lee County, Iowa.

As for Elizabeth Van Hooser, she is listed in the 1830 census of that county. After her parents died, she moved to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois where she died in 1843.
