About William Henry Stock
Death Notice
Mr. H. Stock, of Kakanui, has received news of the death of his son, Trooper W. H. Stock, of fever in South Africa. Trooper Stock went from Oamaru with the Sixth Contingent, and until recently had good health and spirits. Only a week ago a letter was received from him which had been written in the field near Bloemfontein. One of the deceased's brothers, A. F. Stock, was with the Fourth Contingent, and since his return has been employed in town. The greatest sympathy will be felt for Mr and Mrs Stock, who are well known and deservedly popular in the district.
Before World War I, enteric fever, or typhoid fever, was the scourge of armies, and in the Anglo-Boer War killed more soldiers than enemy action. It is caused by a bacteria entering the body via contaminated food or water. Early symptoms include high fever, headaches and lassitude. Follicles along the intestinal walls later become inflamed, often leading to perforation and hemorrhaging. Other complications include gall bladder, pneumonia or heart failure. At the time of the Boer War, there were no antibiotic remedies for the disease.
