Biography

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LTGG-R8X

William Stokes, who ultimately inherited most of the lands of his father, Christopher Stokes, was born 1619, Stanshawes Court, Gloucestershire (NOT Essex), England.

He came to Virginia Colony with his mother, Elizabeth, and brothers, Christopher Jr, Henry, Lancelot & Robert, before/after his father had patented land on the New Poquoson in Charles City County. Two other brothers, Francis & Thomas, were born in Virginia after the family immigrated.

William was thought married to a Young (Ann?), but her name remains unknown, and had five sons: JOHN, SYLVANUS, DAVID, THOMAS, WILLIAM JR (DOBs are estimated & not in any particular order). Names of daughters, if any, are not known.

William's brothers either died young or without children and he inherited what was, or would have been, their lands as well as his own.

He died some time before 1699 in York, VA. (See source attached for further details on this line as well as details included in the Life Sketch for his father. This source by Wilford Perry Stokes includes early history of the Stokes line in England and expands on the descendants of William's son, John.)

His wife's name is unknown; no wives accompanied Christopher Stokes' sons when they arrived Virginia.

Note: William's son, John, sold land in 1699 that was part of his grandfather's original 1637 patent; this may indicate that John had inherited it from his father and that William was deceased by this date.

William Stokes was born in 1619, in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, a son of Christopher Stokes, who immigrated to Virginia before 1635 and on July 21, 1635 obtained a patent for 300 acres of land on the New Poquoson, in Charles River county, (later York county). On August 16, 1637, Christopher obtained 300 acres more adjoining his property and on May 20, 1638, 400 acres on the Warwick River.

Christopher died sometime before 1646, dividing his property between his four sons, Christopher, William, Francis and Thomas.

Christopher, II died, leaving a widow, but no children. His estabe was divided between his wife, Abeatrice, and brothers, William and Francis.

Francis died about 1658, unmarried, leaving William, only survivor, who became owner of all the land patented by his father.

William is stated to have been the father of John Stokes, who obtained a patent for 476 acres of land in Charles City county, on April 25, 1701, and of Sylvanus Stokes, who patented 244 acres in Charles City county, on December 19, 1711, and in 200 acres on the south side of Nottoway River in 1717, and 380 acres adjoining the last grant in 1723. William Stokes died in 1699, in York county, Virginia.
