About William Tod, of Eling

Not the same as William Todd, of Pontefract. Not the father of John Todd, of Bermuda

“Hampshire Record entries designated the 'Tod' spellin, which probably means that this William's family possibly migrated from Scotland or Ireland to England. This was he only Tod/Todd family in the are of Eling in 1600's.

GenForum post by Billie Teague cites:Todd Family of Eling, Southampshire, Englind, Philadelphia and Bucks County, Pennsylvania; Rowan County, North Carolina; Madison County, Kentucky; Butler and Howard Counties, Missouri and Others; Risch, David; self-published; original manuscript in Missouri Valley Room, Kansas City Public Library. This is a well sourced manuscript.

Before we spend a lot of time and energy going further down this road maybe you would tell me why you chose to dismiss the baptismal record of Joseph Todd in Eling Parish, 1645, that clearly names his father as William Tod, a yeoman of Eling, in favor of this tenuous possible connection to the Tudors? I hope my tone doesn't sound unfriendly (especially since we are probably cousins) - but I've been working on this family for thirty years (17 of it online) and I know exactly where this Tudor Theory's roots lie ... and it's a dry hole.”

In some cases, they made guesses or inferences based on the limited data they had, including looking at naming patterns and assuming connections when there were similiar names. DNA has helped us identify when those guesses were right and when those guesses were wrong. One confusing set of guesses had to do with two families of Todds with names like Joseph and Benjamin who both came from southamptonshire in southern England, but who do not share a common male ancestor. One of those families was Joseph Todd of Eling who died in Philadelphia in 1699; another was Joseph Tudor Todd who died in Bermuda. Joseph Todd of Bermuda had a kinsman named Mallory Todd who settled in Isle of Wight Co VA whose DNA does not match the Joseph Todd d 1699 Philadelphia family. These are not related families! ”
