  • Just read your most recent post...in it you say that your UTLEY families are from North Carolina and Virginia yet in a post dated 18 November 2005, you state that your UTLEY family came from England thru Connecticut. (You really cannot have it both ways...either your EARLY Utley family came from the Northern lineages or the Southern.)In that post you also state that Capt William Utley of Connecticut married Elizabeth believed to be of the Turner families and lived in North Carolina. I sent you an email concerning that earlier post and explained to you that the William Utley who lived in CT. was NOT the same person as the William Utley who lived in North Carolina. True they lived in the same time frame BUT they were two seperate individuals. Your next post, 9 January 2006 in response to my email, basically said that the information was accurate and perhaps we should "dig a little deeper". Well as I told you in my email to you, I've researched these families off and on, as time allows, for years and I am telling you once again that the William you claim to be related to is one or the other..they were TWO SEPERATE INDIVIDUALS.
  • Take a look at the following information:
  • William Utley born abt 1715 (parents unknown)
  • died 7 May 1794. North Carolina
  • Wife: Elizabeth
  • Children:
    • Lucy born abt 1739
    • John born abt 1741
    • William born 3 Jan 1743/44
    • Jacob born abt 1747
    • Isham born abt 1750
    • Hezekiah born abt 1752
    • Cynthia born abt 1758
    • David born abt 1760
    • Littleton born abt 1775
  • Capt William Utley born 5 Feb 1724 Windham, CT
  • died 17 March 1790, Landgrove, Vermont (as noted in the town records by his son Asa in 1803)
  • Wife: Sarah Peabody
  • Children:
    • Asa born 12 June 1751
    • Bridget born 2 Jan 1753
    • William born 21 Oct 1754
    • Cynthia born 3 Aug 1763
    • Oliver born 4 May 1765
    • Peabody born 31 Jan 1769
  • Capt William Utley's children were all born in CT but the family moved to Landgrove, Vermont where he remained the rest of his life. This William was the first settler in Landgrove and members of his family were quite active in the town's affairs.
  • As you can see, that while there may be parallels in the two groups, they ARE TWO DIFFERENT and DISTINCT families. This information can be found in the original records for the areas and time frames involved. I'm not trying to embarrass you, I just get tired of the same old MISinformation (the two Williams being one and the same) being passed along as fact when there is NO basis in fact. We all need to be very careful in our research if we want our records to be accurate so perhaps you should begin to "dig a little deeper" as you put it.
