John VARDEMAN, Jr. born Sweden ca. l727 came with his Father and family to South Carolina ca. l734, married Elizabeth MORGAN in South Carolina and moved to Virgina. Any ship records from this early? VARDEMAN family were Swedish Lutherans but as there were no Lutheran Churches they became members of the established church (Anglican). A James VARDEMAN served in Revolution from South Carolina, a relative of some sort to my ancestor (not too many VARDEMANs in Colonial records), and another listing for a VARDEMAN as resident of Old 96th District.

In 1769, South Carolina had 8 Circuit Court Districts, one was known as Ninety-Six District. Between 1785-89, eight counties were established within Ninety-Six District: Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenville, Laurens, Newberry, Pendleton, Spartanburg, and Union. Later, labels fluctuated between either Districts or Counties, and additional counties were formed from these. Today, 15 of South Carolina's 46 counties were formed from some part of what was Old Ninety-Six District. (Information Source: Schweitzer, George K. "South Carolina Genealogical Research.") If you know county and surname associations, it is to your advantage to post your queries to the appropriate SC GenWeb Project County Page. Occasionally, researchers may find that their families were in Ninety-Six District, but left the area before counties were established, like in the case of our first query- a Loyalist family that went to Canada in 1783. This page is for you!
