    • "William Henry Wallace was born Nov 4, 1848 in Laurens County. His family have been more fully identified with Newberry than with Laurens County.

    • "Spartansburg, May 16 - William Henry Wallace, 72 years of age, in 1900 Editor of The Greenville News, and for 41 years Editor of the Newberry Observer, formerly a weekly and now a semi-weekly newspaper, died at the home of his son, Dr. D. D. Wallace on Wofford campus, this afternoon, after an illness of a month's duration. Mr. Wallace was a pioneer newspaper man in South Carolina.
    • "Mr. Wallace was on a visit to his son of Wofford College, having come here April 17. For the last few days, his condition has been hopeless, and the end was expected.
    • "He was born November 4, 1848, and was reared in the Belfast section of Newberry County. He was graduated with the A.B. degree at Wofford College in 1871, receiving his M.A. degree from Wofford two years later.
** "After five years as Superintendent of Newberry County Schools, he was Editor of The Greenville News one year. His eyesight failed and he returned to Newberry, where he resumed his work with the Observer, which he founded in 1883. 
  • * "He was married in Spartanburg December 26th, 1872, to Miss Alice Lumax [sic] of Abbeville. His wife died September 25, 1920, and he lived with his brother, Robert Wallace at Newberry thereafter, until going to Spartanburg last month.
    • "Mr. Wallace was one of the State's best known newspaper men. He was offered places as editorial writers for the leading dailies of the State at various times.
    • "Mr. Wallace was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wallace. His parents were Scotch-Irish, his ancestors coming from Scotland and settling in Albemarle County, Virginia. Mr. Wallace is survived by one son, David Duncan Wallace, Professor of History and Economics at Wofford College."
