William Watkins had not been in America long when the Revolutionary War started, and he joined the fighting forces. He was a private in the Maryland unit during the war. He was a drummer in the Third Maryland Regiment, Continental Line, Captain Squires' company, Colonel Mordecai Gist's regiment. William enlisted 10 Dec 1776 and served until 1 Jan 1781 and then enlisted 1 Jan 1781 to serve until the close of the war. He was at the surrender of Yorktown and was discharged 29 Nov 1783.
