About William Wellington Welles

Camp Point, Aug. 5.— William Welles, who for several years has been a resident of Camp Point, died Sunday morning just as the old church bell that had called him to Sunday school so often was ringing for the morning service. He had been in failing health for the past two years and in February of the present year suffered a stroke of paralysis and lost entirely the use of his left side. At time he was slightly improved, but the past few weeks has declined rapidly and after a stupor lasting several days passed peacefully away. Mr. Welles was a member of the Presbyterian church since early boyhood and has been active in church and social life, serving for many years as elder and holding responsible positions in the Sunday school and church. He was socially inclined and was a favorite of old people and children, to whom he was kindly disposed. William Wellington Welles, son of Horace and Ellen F. Welles, was born on a farm near Springfield, October 9, 1855, and spent most of his life in his native state He was twice married, first to Ella Miller of Divernon, Ill., in 1888, who died a few years later. His second wife was Miss Anna Miner, whom he married in 1899. In 1899 he went into business at Springfield. He and his wife lived several years in Texas, but returned in 1910 to Divernon and cared for his father, who died in 1913. After the death of his father they moved to Camp Point to live with and care for Mrs. Welles parents, Rev. and Mrs. Miner and were faithful to their trust. Rev. Miner passed away two years ago and the next winter Mr. and Mrs. Welles moved to Lucedale, Miss., remaining until March 17 of the present year, when they returned to Camp Point. He is survived by his wife and two brothers, Charles H., of Divernon, and Fred Welles of Edna, Texas. Funeral services will be conducted Monday evening at 7 o'clock at the Miner home by Rev. A. R. Grummon, who in the absence of a resident Presbyterian paster and who has been a welcome visitor at the bedside of the deceased, will have charge of the services. On Tuesday morning the remains will be taken to Clayton and accompanied by the family and friend will leave on the early train for Divernon, were interment will be made.
